Fluendo Announces Partnership with the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute
Multimedia Company to Acquire H.265 Decoder from Application Research Organization

Fluendo (http://www.fluendo.com/), a company that enables multimedia and video on a wide variety of devices and operating systems, is announcing a new partnership with The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (http://www.hhi.fraunhofer.de/en.html). Fraunhofer HHI is part of Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization Fraunhofer. Under the terms of the partnership, Fluendo is acquiring Fraunhofer HHI’s industry-leading H.265 decoder in order to extend high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) support to its cross-platform multimedia ONEPLAY suite of solutions.
H.265/MPEG-HEVC is the new compression standard format for HD video playback, Ultra High Definition playback and beyond, a successor totheH.264/MPEG4-AVC video format. Fraunhofer HHI is one of the main contributors to the HEVC standard, which achieves a 50 percent bitrate reduction compared to H.264, all while maintaining the same subjective video quality.
“Supporting HEVC through our solutions is the next logical step for our customers who want the best HD video playback capabilities,” said Muriel Moscardini, CEO of Fluendo. “By adding Fraunhofer HHI’s decoder to Fluendo’s proven multimedia player, ONEPLAY becomes one of the few media players in the world that is able to support HEVC, which we expect to be the future de facto video format globally.”
