Lyngsoe Systems’ Intelligent Material Management System™ (IMMS) Expands its Presence with First Customer in United Kingdom

The University of Liverpool Library is delighted to be working with Lyngsoe Systems to combine best practice from the world of logistics with library data using IMMS.

[Aars, Denmark, 15/08/2019] Lyngsoe Systems is pleased to announce that Liverpool University Library has become the first UK institution and the first institution outside Scandinavia to opt for Lyngsoe Systems Intelligent Material Management System™. The University Library will integrate IMMS with their Sierra Library Management System from Innovative Interfaces Inc.

At University of Liverpool, the Library plays a key role in supporting the University’s intensive research and teaching by taking a proactive path and applying the best new technology to its services. The library is con-stantly on the prowl for the next big innovation that will make its wealth of resources easier to use and access. Its approach is assertive but disciplined, adopting early only on bona fide advances: those that take finding and using information a full step ahead.

IMMS complements Sierra and creates an unprecedented level of transparency in the material flow. Utilizing the latest tools for data collection, material management and logistics, items can be tracked to the shelf, shelving cart, transport bin, or storage location. These tools greatly increase the quality of data, and significantly improve the circulation of collections. As well as accurately keep track of every item placement in collections spanning over 15 kms of shelves. IMMS also helps prevent and/or detect handling errors and supplies accurate and detailed reports on item use and placements.

Roy McCready, Systems Manager for Libraries, Museums and Galleries at the University of Liverpool, states: “The University of Liverpool Library is delighted to be working with Lyngsoe Systems to combine best practice from the world of logistics with library data using IMMS. In our academic library setting, the space optimiza-tion features of IMMS will be particularly beneficial in enabling us to balance the high demand for study space with our need to preserve the richness of our collections for researchers into the future. Automated collection management, using real-time shelf management and evidence-based decision making, will also give us better control of the Library’s stock and will become a faster and more fluid process. These improve-ments to our workflows will enable new services to be delivered and we look forward to using IMMS to support new initiatives, such as a book delivery service and paperless holds.”

Henrik Kjeldgaard, Business Unit Director from Lyngsoe Systems, states: “We are happy and proud to ex-tend the cooperation with Liverpool University Library, as they will be our first IMMS UK customer. We are furthermore proud to see the list of IMMS customers further increasing, which we believe is a result of the tendency that more libraries focus on being forward-thinking. We are sure this is a partnership bringing value to the patrons of Liverpool University Library in many years to come.”

Robert Jacobs, VP of International Sales at Innovative, states: “Innovative has a history of bringing leading technology to libraries, so working with the Lyngsoe Systems IMMS solution is a perfect match. We are very happy that the University of Liverpool, a long-time Innovative customer, is going to benefit from the ad-vanced capabilities of IMMS that build on the robust Sierra system. Sierra is designed to make libraries ef-fective with seamless integrations, so IMMS is a great example of extending Sierra to help further optimize the space, logistics, and overall management of the library in real-time.”

AMH: An automated material handling system automates some of the sorting processes in a library. It allows patrons to return media without staff intervention. Patrons return media into the sorting system through dedicated inductions, where the integrated scanners read the media, and automatically report the media as returned to the library management system, where all data re-sides. The integrated scanners in the inductions read the RFID tags and/or bar codes on the media, and the software determines the appropriate material category (e.g. Novels), before sending the me-dia on to the sorter. The sorter conveys the media to the chute as defined by the library staff in the control software.

IMMS: The Intelligent Material Management System is a logistical system, which complements your existing ILS/LMS and creates an unprecedented level of transparency in your material flow. Utilizing new tools for data collection, items can be tracked to the shelf, shelving cart, transport bin, or storage location. These tools greatly increase the quality of data, and significantly improve the circulation of your collection. The intelligent distribution-algorithm manages and optimizes item distribution in a floating or partly floating collection.
