Twitter bans all political advertising worldwide

Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, outlines the company's position in a series of tweets.

Twitter’s CEO has announced the company’s new policy in a series of tweets. The policy will come into effect on 22nd November 2019.

"A political message earns reach when people decide to follow an account or retweet,” said Dorsey, in a series of threaded tweets. “Paying for reach removes that decision, forcing highly optimized and targeted political messages on people. We believe this decision should not be compromised by money."

In the announcement, Dorsey states that political ads presented "entirely new challenges to civic discourse" including "machine learning-based optimisation of messaging", "micro-targeting, unchecked misleading information, and deep fakes".

Meanwhile, Facebook’s position is much more equivocal. It continues to state that it does fact-check advertisements, but NOT political advertisements.
