Scotland: library cards for all children

£80k funding to trial membership initiatives in a bid to improve literacy.

According to the BBC, every local authority area in Scotland is testing projects that will see all children in the country automatically enrolled at a library.  Libraries will be working with schools and communities to help promote the initiative.

Dumfries and Galloway Council has already launched its ‘Every Child a Member’ initiative.  In Glasgow, every baby registered from September 2015 will be given a library card by the registrar.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon recognised the value of libraries to local communities in welcoming the initiative "Our libraries are often the hub of a local community, providing vital access to information and resources that people would otherwise not have".
