Set in Concrete: The Württemberg State Library wins Architecture 2020 Concrete Award

The extension to the Württemberg State Library in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, received the Architecture 2020 Concrete Award.

World Cement magazine announced that the extension to the Württemberg State Library in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, received the Architecture 2020 Concrete Award. The building, which was designed by the Stuttgart-based architecture firm, Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Oei, employs an exposed concrete facade made from sawn-rough planks. The bright colouring of the concrete skin achieved by the white cement is further enhanced by pigmentation with titanium dioxide.

With this facade, the new building continues the look of the old building, built in the 1960s, which is also characterised by natural wood formwork. According to the architects, the intention was to integrate the extension not have it look like an independent building. The official opening is planned for late summer 2020.

The building has six levels, with the upper floors housing freely accessible lending stocks (a total of 500.000 volumes) and reading spaces.
