Wikimedia wins right to sue the NSA

Latest decision in ongoing lawsuit.

An ongoing lawsuit filed by Wikimedia and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) against the National Security Agency (NSA) is in the news again. A federal appeals court has decided that that Wikimedia does have grounds to sue the NSA over the mass interception of internet communications.

In 2013 Ed Snowden revealed the existence of a mass surveillance system called Upstream.  The lawsuit claims that the use of this type of surveillance on Wikipedia users contravenes the First and Fourth Amendments to the United States Constitution.

The appeals court ruling states that Wikimedia has presented sufficient evidence that the NSA was in fact monitoring its communications, even if inadvertently.
